A free alternative to Spendee, Money Lover and Wallet

These three apps look a lot like Wally: wallets, categories, budgets and several currencies. The difference is what stays free. Their free plans stop at one to three wallets, and budgets, export or bank import cost extra. In Wally, none of it does.

Spendee

Spendee's free plan gives one cash wallet and one budget, and exports only the last 365 days. Plus unlocks more wallets, budgets and shared wallets; Premium adds connections to banks, e-wallets and crypto exchanges and AI receipt scanning. Wally has no plans: every wallet and budget is free, and purchases arrive from your bank's notifications or Apple Pay. If you share a wallet with a partner in Spendee, note that Wally has no shared wallets; two people can keep their records apart with profiles.

Money Lover

After its 14-day trial, a free Money Lover account keeps one wallet and one recurring transaction, and always shows ads. Premium is a one-time $19.99 on the US App Store, but bank sync is a separate monthly subscription that Premium does not include. Money Lover also has a web version and is testing Apple Pay and Google Pay tracking. In Wally, wallets, recurring payments, import and the absence of ads come with the free app.

Wallet by BudgetBakers

Wallet's free tier allows three accounts; more accounts, data export and automatic bank updates need Premium, with prices shown only in the app. Its bank coverage is broad, which is its main strength. If you can live without a direct bank feed, Wally gives unlimited wallets and budgets for free, and imports purchases from notifications or Apple Pay instead.

Why Wally can stay free

Wally keeps your data on your phone and syncs it through your own Google Drive, so there is no bank aggregator to pay for and no server full of your transactions to run. There is nothing to sell: no subscription, no in-app purchases, no ads, and your data is never sold. More answers in the FAQ.
