Log Apple Pay payments automatically
iPhone doesn't let apps read bank notifications, but the Shortcuts app can react to every Apple Pay payment. Set up one automation, and each payment lands in your Wally budget by itself, even while Wally is closed.

Free in Wally. No subscription and no bank login: the automation passes only the amount, the merchant and the card name. Wally never sees your card number or bank account, and the payment is recorded on your iPhone.
Before you start
Install Wally from the App Store (iOS 16 or later). In Wally, on the Wallets tab, tap Bank sync on a wallet card, or Connect a bank while you create a wallet, and choose the wallet for Apple Pay payments. Wally then shows these same steps with a button that opens Shortcuts.
iOS 26 and earlier
- Open Shortcuts, go to the Automation tab and tap +.
- Choose Wallet (Transaction on iOS 18 and earlier), select the cards you pay with, pick Run Immediately and tap Next.
- Tap Create New Shortcut (New Blank Automation on iOS 18 and earlier) and add the Log Transaction action of Wally.
- In the action, tap Amount and pick Shortcut Input, then tap the inserted Shortcut Input and choose Amount.
- Fill in Merchant and Card the same way: Shortcut Input → Merchant, and Shortcut Input → Card or Pass.
- Tap Done. Pay with Apple Pay, and the expense appears in Wally.
iOS 27
iOS 27 moved automations inside shortcuts, so the first steps differ:
- Open Shortcuts, create a new shortcut, tap Edit, then Automation, and choose Wallet. Select the cards you pay with.
- Below it, add the Log Transaction action of Wally.
- Tap Amount, pick Shortcut Input, then tap it and choose Amount.
- Fill in Merchant and Card the same way.
- Tap the shortcut's info button, then Privacy, and turn on Allow Running When Locked: you usually pay with the iPhone locked.
- Tap Done and pay with Apple Pay.
Good to know
- Contactless payments at a terminal. The Wallet trigger fires for Apple Pay payments in shops. Online and in-app purchases are not passed on.
- Declined payments. Shortcuts runs the automation on a declined payment too; delete such a record by hand.
- No duplicates. If the same payment reaches Wally twice, it is added once.
- Categories. Wally picks a category on the phone from a built-in list of shops and your own choices, and learns when you change one.
- Other currencies. A payment in another currency is converted to the wallet's currency. If Wally has no exchange rate for that currency yet, it doesn't guess: you get a message asking you to add the payment by hand.
- Turning it off. Turn off the automation in Shortcuts or disconnect Apple Pay in Wally at any time; your wallets and records stay.
On Android, Wally reads your bank's notifications instead: track expenses from bank notifications.
